SEO techniques play an important role in improving the visibility of your website in search engine listings. Search Engine Optimization is defined as the process of making the contents of the website relevant for both users and search engines. In other words it’s the method of attracting search engine spiders to crawl over your website to increase its ranking for specific keywords.

To elaborate – for people to find a site through a search engine, the site requires a high SERP (Search Engine Results Position) as people rarely go to the second page of the search results. This means that when a user searches with relevant keywords or phrases, they should be able to find your website page listed on the first page of the search results. Today people using the search engine optimization technique as an effective method for increasing the relevance of a particular website. The commonly accepted technique in SEO is the method of including unique phrases into the content of websites and thereby making sure the content is indexed by search engine robots. This can be done by inputting articles or other writings in the website containing your target keyword phrases for which you want your site to achieve high search engine rankings. This method is commonly accepted as the secure and cost effective method of increasing the traffic of the website.

If you’re trying to improve the ranking of your website on the top search engines, you are likely involved in some sort of link building. After all, links account for at least 50% of the overall organic strength of a website.

Links are important, but how do you get them, and how to you ensure that they stick around? There are a variety of methods to gaining links; from blogging and building social profiles, to renting links and mass submitting your site to directories. But there are two critical elements you should build into your link strategy:

• Permanent links • One way links

Permanent links never go away. Years down the road, a permanent link may still be recognized by search engines, and be counted toward your site’s popularity score. A residual effect occurs as these links build over time.

One way links are important, as search engines have become accustomed to ignoring an abundance of reciprocal links. This is because too many webmasters over the years have simply said ‘you scratch my back, and I’ll scratch yours’ – and began sharing links back and forth across the web to build popularity.

Linking back and forth between two sites, does little to show popularity of any one website, thus search engines discount them, or ignore them altogether. Instead, search engines prefer to see one way links. These links tell an engine that the site the link is on, must recognize the importance of the site its linking to. You want as many one-way links pointing to your site as possible.

So how do you gain permanent, on-way links? In other words, how to you build your portfolio of links that will stick around… possibly forever – and ones that do not require reciprocal linking?

Unlike rented links, where your link disappears as quickly as you stop paying for them, permanent links are embedded in a site and may be there till the end of time. There are many ways to get permanent links, but the easiest method, and probably the one with the best ROI, is to hire a professional service to place one-way permanent links across the web.

A permanent link service will look to a variety of quality sites to place your one-way links: • Article sites • Social Bookmark sites • Blog review links • Local directories • And many others

These permanent link sites, and others like them, build upon the content that is generated by users. These articles, blogs pages, and directories continue to post content that site visitors insert. The sites grow larger and larger, but they rarely, if ever, remove content. Therefore, a link placed on such a site would inevitably still be there years later. These types of content sites and blogs also do not ask for reciprocal links, so each link will also be one-way. This is a great way to cover both elements in your link strategy at once.

As you place these links, it’s important to look at the relevancy of content on each site, ensure the ability to add a target keyword within the anchor text of each link, and track the effectiveness of your link building activity over time.

Permanent and one-way link building takes a great deal of time and effort. But if done correctly, this strategy will provide great long-term results for your website.

10 Off-Page Tips for Search Engine Optimization November 12, 2009

The problem that so many people today have and you may be one of them, is that they completely fail to comprehend the level of competition that they are up against online. Sure they have a good product or service that has passed the test marketing tests locally, but then they find that they can’t give it away online.

But wait a minute! Aren’t there millions, if not billions of potential customers and clients on the net? You bet there are but there’s also some pretty heavy competition too. This means that unless you have some new patented invention that absolutely no one else has, you just might have hundreds of thousands of people that you have to beat out.

The good news is that most of your competition is patient. For they know that if you just give something enough time it will work. While this may work in a standard community based business, it will get them nowhere online. There are just too many people and the rules aren’t set up that way.

This leaves the door wide open for you if you’re willing to invest some of your time and resources into search engine optimization. Also if you’re willing to roll up your sleeves and do a lot of the work yourself, it need not be expensive at all. The first thing on your agenda though should be to learn as many SEO techniques that you can.

1. Get listed in the major directories with high trust: DMOZ, Yahoo, and others.

2. Submit articles to article directories like ezinearticles for backlinks.

3. Write guest posts for blogs in your niche in exchange for links. Free content in exchange for links.

4. Comment on other blogs for traffic and backlinks. Blog commenting.

5. When you submit new articles to your website, make sure they are submitted to the best social bookmarking sites like Digg, Reddit, and Newsvine.

6. Submit articles to web 2.0 content sites such as Squidoo and Hubpages for easy links to your website. I’ve done this a lot and have seen significant increases in search engine rankings.

7. Participate in discussion groups and forums related to your niche. Often time’s forums will allow signature links where you can place your website for easy backlinks with every forum post you make.

8. Link baiting is a big topic for SEO because of just how powerful it is in building hundreds of backlinks to your site. This means huge increases in your search engine rankings. An easy way to link bait is by developing a website widget and promoting it via social methods. When websites use your widget you can add a little link to it – if 100 websites use your widget that’s 100 links.

9. Avoid any kind of black hat off-page SEO: links farms, spamming, etc… A lot of people use these kinds of techniques to improve their rankings but it only ends up doing serious damage to their website’s trust and rankings.

10. Does your website have an RSS feed? Get that submitted to all the big RSS directories that will then syndicate your content and link back to your content.
